You can get started for about the same price as a box of throwaway diapers. While you will need to buy two sizes as your baby grows, you will still be able to cloth diaper 2 kids for about $300 - and still have cleaning rags left at the end. Best of all, simple cotton diapers are remarkably problem-free. Some babies do better with a natural fiber against their skin, and prefolds are less prone to detergent buildup than synthetics. Stains come out with good old sunlight. Folding prefold cloth diapers may seem daunting at first, but in no time you'll be a pro.
Diaper pins are great if you want to use them, but they are by no means necessary. A simple Snappi diaper fastener helps you get a snug fit in a flash - or simply fold the prefold into thirds and pay it into a snug fitting diaper cover. If you use the trifold method, you'll want to buy a few extra covers since the covers do tend to get dirty more often this way. We recommend at least 4-6 cloth diaper covers per size for each baby in cloth diapers. Thirsties Duo Wraps are a customer favorite since they grow with your baby and you'll only need two sizes from birth to potty.
Made with soft and durable 100% cotton fiber, these white prefolds are a joy to use. They are perfect for burp cloths or cleaning cloths, as well as for diapering your baby. They start out flat and smooth. Don't panic! They'll wash up fluffy and absorbent with a few washings. We usually wash them three times and then dry them once before the first use. If you prefer, you can wash and dry, wash and dry, wash dry, wash and dry before using. We think that is a waste. They will be absorbent enough for use after just three washes and they will continue to get more absorbent over time. We like things simple around here.
While many people are worried about folding Chinese prefold cloth diapers, they are really simple to use - as you can see in my video below.
Before washing, these are about 12x16 inches. They fluff up to about 11x14.5 inches. They will fit from about 7-15 pounds. If you are worried about bulk on a small newborn, try the newborn size. Many parents size up before 15 pounds if their babies are taller or wider than average. Infant size Chinese prefolds are perfect for stuffing pocket diapers as well. 100% cotton - made in China.
Chinese prefolds tend to be a bit more durable. Indian prefolds tend to be a bit softer. These are premium quality 4x6x4 layered. Some parents prefer the trimmer fit of 4x6x4 layering - others prefer the slightly thicker 4x8x4 premium Indian prefold cloth diapers we carry. We've used both and don't have a clear preference.
Prewash Chinese prefold diapers 3-5 times before using. They are safe to use after 1 wash, but will continue to become more absorbent up to about 8 washes. Machine wash, line or tumble dry. Avoid bleach of any kind or fabric softener. Sunlight is the best stain treatment and it is safe for your baby. Chlorine bleach prematurely breaks down cotton fibers and it creates toxic gases that can stay in your home for days after use. It is also bad for the environment.
We recommend storing used diapers in a dry pail until wash day - soaking diapers can break down the fibers and set in odors. A pail of water is a drowning hazard for toddlers and could create a huge mess if tipped. We much prefer the safety and convenience of a dry pail.
While there are no guarantees, a set of 24-36 Chinese infant prefolds will generally last through two children provided they are cared for properly.
