Please educate yourself and your baby's caregivers about the dangers of improper car seat use. More than 8,700 infants are rushed to emergency rooms each year due to injuries from car seats used to hold babies outside of a car.
Car seats in cars save lives and are vital for your baby's safety. Outside of the car, they should not be used for sleeping or as a substitute for holding your baby. We are greatly alarmed by the current trend of putting a car seat cover on an infant car seat - then leaving the baby in the car seat for long periods. If your baby has trouble breathing while in a covered car seat - how will you know? Look for car seat covers that make it easy to see your baby and don't leave them in the seat longer than necessary.
Few parents are aware that car seats can place baby's head in a tilted position that restricts the windpipe. Some seat covers themselves may also endanger infants by covering the seat so completely that it restricts air flow. One risk factor for SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is rebreathing expelled air. When a car seat is completely covered, the baby is breathing the same air over and over. We only sell car seat covers that allow for good ventilation.
A study in the journal Pediatrics estimated that 43,562 car seat–related injuries were treated in emergency departments from 2003 to 2007. Of these injuries, 49.1% occurred at home, 8.4% of the infants had to be hospitalized, and 84.3% of the infants suffered a head injury. Most commonly, these accidents occurred due to car seats falling off of an elevated surface such as a table or shopping cart or overturning on a soft surface (causing suffocation).
While infant car seats have been designed to carry babies, they are not a substitute for a baby carrier.
